The Turning Point
It was on the team Bus back from the Dutch open that got me in to grappling arts although I had always fancied some form of throwing art such as judo from watching Martial arts Movies. UFC 1 was shown on the team bus and this completely turned the martial arts world upside down!! there was me a Tkd guy who was quietly confident in his ability begin to worry that if he his skills where effective enough for combat at all? so I began to search for clubs in my area to train grappling i found a kempo Ju Jitsu and trained there from the age of 16 to 19 after a fall out with the coach I decided to look at Judo and it was here where I found something that looked more realistic and like what I saw Royce Gracie do in ufc so I began to train in judo at derby Olympus judo club round about this time eventually i managed to gain a brown belt after going through some hard fought battles on the mat at such a tough judo club
Influences
My training became heavy influenced by Geoff Thompson and also Rick young. I read almost every book or magazine article that was published at the time on self protection and cross training. This became my mine priority I even took up security work to expose myself to potential violent situations.Geoff Thompson books influenced my training because of that I decided to try some full contact striking arts such as Boxing and later Muay Thai boxing for a period of 5 years. I had put myself through some solid cross training blood sweat and sometimes tears but it was all worth it as a student and young man in his early 20's, I had allot of time on my hands I Itrained in Mauy Thai and Judo weekly this was the period where I began to mature as a fighter my skillset became diverse, this coincided with the steady growth in popularity of MMA in the uk. Made popular by events such as UFC WCC PRIDE CAGE RAGE so my training then began to steer towards the MMA style of fighting the urge to train in mma was getting greater I began to look for clubs in my area but at the time there was none.
MMA
I already had cross trained in striking and grappling, MMA training helped bring these skills together. As an off shot of this approach to training no gi submission wrestling became very popular one of the core skills needed for training in MMA .I have trained MMA style for 5 years and with the growing popularity I always on the look out to improve training and tactical gameplans to the club.
